Meet the Space: DeskLabs

DeskLabs is a new Lakeview coworking spot ready to take your work and city views to the next level. We talked with membership coordinator Heather about what makes it a great place to connect, collaborate and create.

The DeskLabs entryway.

What are some of your favorite things about the space?

Our space is truly one of a kind. This 95 year old vintage building has exposed brick and lofted ceilings. The floor to ceiling windows on every one of our three floors fill the space with natural light. And to top it off (literally and figuratively) our rooftop deck is like nothing else you will find in this neighborhood. It has unobstructed 360 degree views, including the skyline. And have no fear, the 200 mb internet is enabled up there as well, so when we say all work AND play, we mean it.

Our rooftop deck is like nothing else you will find.

Beautiful lofted ceilings and open coworking area at DeskLabs.

What’s nearby when a cowoker wants to stretch their legs?

The options are endless! Since we are located right in the heart of the Lakeview neighborhood we are in walking distance of dozens of great places. A few of our favorites include, DMK Burger Bar, Fish Bar, Pastoral, Mortar and Pestle, Aloha Poke Co., Crisp, Kuma’s Corner…the list goes on and on. We are also a five minute walk from Trader Joe’s and steps away from the brand new Mariano’s on Broadway which will be opening its doors very soon.

A cozy kitchen / bar for networking.

How does your space embody the neighborhood?

We are all about connection and collaboration. The Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce has welcomed us with open arms and so have all the small business owners that line the streets of this neighborhood. We are proud to be able to be a part of this community and serve the creative and innovative people who live in it.

We are all about connection and collaboration.

No man is an island, but it might be cool to work on one! Head to Stolp Island in downtown Aurora to work at Metropolitan Coworking, available on Deskpass.

What are some of your favorite things about the space?

Herman Miller workspaces, a WorkCenter with all the goodies and great lighting are highlights of our renovated 1915 space. And, at this time of year, everyone enjoys the amazing deck overlooking the Fox River. Plus, awesome coffee from Rivers Edge Café is just next door, or through that same deck.

What’s nearby when a cowoker wants to stretch their legs?

Beyond the easy access coffee and everything downtown Aurora has to offer, some favorites include the Riverfront Playhouse and Paramount Theatre, which sees more than a half million people through its doors for Broadway-style shows and is on the next block. Rivers Edge Park is close, too, and a major perk with . Nearby is a bike shop and a brand spanking new public library is just 2 blocks away and features incredible technology. Part of Stolp Island’s renaissance is seeing fantastic new businesses, art and cultural spots, live/work spaces, coffee shops, restaurants and river activities pop up all the time.

What kind of work do you do?

I help people align their lifestyle & finances to get where they want to go. Lifestyle financial planning is the process I use to help make that happen. Think dream manager, financial planner and accountability coach all rolled into one!

What was your workspace situation like pre-Deskpass or how does Deskpass compliment how you’ve been working?

I keep an office in Oak Park. That’s where I started my practice 7 years ago. However, many of my clients & business partners work in the city, so I started exploring coworking options. It was easier to meet and not lose time commuting back and forth between Oak Park. I spent three months at one coworking spot in Fulton Market before I stumbled upon Deskpass. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Where have you worked via Deskpass? Do you go to the same places or like to mix it up?

I’ve worked at Assemble West Loop & Old Town, Level Office, Serendipity Labs, Forum, and COCO Enerspace. I’m a routine person (shocking for a planner, right?), but I’ve been forcing myself to try out all of the different spaces before settling in on my favorites.

three things: environment, coffee & location

What factors into the spaces you’re booking on a given day?

Three things—environment, coffee & location. When I’m working on creating content or writing blog posts, I like to pick a more creative space. I’m also a self admitted coffee snob, so both Assemble locations get high marks for serving Ipsento. When I’m meeting with someone, I pick a space that’s convenient for them.

Why did you choose a Deskpass membership?

While I enjoyed having a dedicated space, once folks saw my space once, they preferred to meet closer to their work / place next time. Deskpass is great as it provides flexibility for me to meet folks all around the city and still be efficient with my work day. I also love the option to change up my environment based on what I’m working on or who I’m meeting with. Oh, and the coffee. It’s always about the coffee.

it provides flexibility for me to meet folks all around the city and still be efficient with my work day

What’s your favorite Deskpass related moment…so far?

My first day using Deskpass, the space I had booked was closed. Luckily for me, another more veteran Deskpasser was also there. He told me there was another space about 4 blocks away he had been to before and we walked over together. I reached out to the Deskpass team and they were apologetic (even though it wasn’t their fault) and quick to fix the glitch. What could have been a bad experience actually made me immediately feel like part of the community and that Deskpass really cared about their members.

Meet the Space: Greenhouse Loft

Greenhouse Loft Exterior

One of the best things about coworking spaces is the way they can inspire and transport you. Nowhere in Chicago is that happening more than at Greenhouse Loft, a coworking space in Logan Square…and on Deskpass.

What are some of your favorite things about the space?

The space is always full of natural light. No matter what season or weather, you’ll always kind of feel like you are sitting outside. We actually call our space “The Glasshouse” as the main wall is made up of floor to ceiling (that’s 16 feet up!) windows looking out to the garden.

No matter what season or weather, you’ll always kind of feel like you are sitting outside.

Every seat in the place is comfortable and carefully curated by the owners who take massive pride in their eclectic mid-century furniture collection. Having a delicious restaurant like Arbor literally steps from the space is also a huge plus. Feel like a local salad or burger, glass of wine, cappuccino, craft made cocktail? They have it all.

We are located in the Green Exchange, which is a certified Plantinum LEED certified building, and we pride ourselves on being the most sustainable mixed use space in the city. Everything is composted, recycled, or reused here.

How does your space embody the neighborhood?

Logan Square is an innovative and creative neighborhood. We hope to embody all that. We are the answer to your Starbucks problems, no pressure to move or buy something. Our offerings are simple – space, cozy furniture, natural light, coffee, granola bars, good music, internet, and chill vibes. We are always changing and evolving, much like the Logan Square neighborhood.

Why offer Deskpass?

We have existed as an event and meeting space for almost five years now in the Green Exchange Building. While we have lots of weddings and a handful of corporate meetings a month, there are plenty of days where the space was sitting empty.

We wanted to bring a creative energy back and see more locals enjoy the space on a daily basis. It’s wonderful to have so many independent contractors, freelancers, and generally cool people from the neighborhoods of Chicago dropping by, getting work done, or sometimes just getting a chance to relax and read.

Meet the People: Regina Martinez

Coworking is as much about the co- as it is about the -working. To inspire you with what’s possible with a Deskpass membership, we want to introduce you to one of our members.

Meet Regina.

Regina Martinez

What kind of work do you do?

I am a Senior Project Manager handling clients globally covering APAC, EMEA and North America. I am responsible for managing all stages of the end-to-end business—from initiation and identifying the scope of work, planning, execution and monitoring all moving parts and actions required for People, Process and Technology associated with Client Relations and the delivery of Customer Solutions until project close. My working hours are flexible since I am supporting different time zones based on the location of the client, so I have the advantage of working remotely.

What was your workspace situation like pre-Deskpass?

I constantly travel and my working hours are flexible. When I don’t have to be at the client site, I report at our offices across different states but primarily in Manila office. When I am in Chicago, I stay in the suburbs right in the comfort of home. I really like the setup—I can manage my own time and work remotely. It strikes perfect work-life balance even if I have to follow one or two time zones.

Do you go to the same places or like to mix it up?

I like to experience the different environments of every office since each Deskpass space is unique. I have worked at Space, Assemble Gold Coast, Assemble West Loop, Free Range Office, Signature Office, Workshop, The Beta at BKB, Grind, Greenhouse Loft and NextSpace River North.

Each Deskpass space is unique

I booked Free Range office at Wicker Park twice because it is close to a lot of restaurants that I like to dine at (ramen!) and Greenhouse Loft office has a relaxing and cozy vibe. NextSpace gives you the sense of comfort and feeling at home because the people are warm and friendly.

How do you decide where to work?

The office that I go to on any day depends on my work requirements—frequency of meetings and work deliverable. Mondays and Wednesdays are pretty busy. I need to host client meetings so I prefer a more corporate office nearby that I can easily get to and that has meeting rooms or a phone booth that I can use. For days that are less busy, I pick spaces near the restaurants and places that I want to visit, or that are close to where I’m meeting up with friends.

Why did you choose a Deskpass membership?

There are days that I want to break out of the routine and have that focus and corporate feel to get me to that level of mindset, especially when I am working on a project plan or a presentation for the client or hosting a conference call or meeting. Deskpass allows me to have an office that suits my working environment requirements, which greatly affects the results that I want to accomplish.

There are days I want to break out of the routine

What’s your favorite Deskpass related moment?

The first time I tried the Deskpass mobile app, I accidentally booked a different office and had to call for assistance. It was 8ish in the morning and I was on my way walking along Wacker drive when I received a call from Kris. She patiently helped me with my concern…and more!

She gave me tips on how to start with my first Deskpass office and what to expect when I got to the venue. I ended up calling her more than three times that day for more questions. As it turned out, there was an opportunity to improve the content of the mobile app. That made me feel like I am part of the improvement process and that Deskpass truly values member feedback. At the end of the day, it felt like I made a new friend.

Deskpass truly values member feedback

During the second Coworking Mixer at Greenhouse Loft / Arbor, I got to meet the Deskpass team and other members sharing coworking experience, the coolest remote offices, some pretty good restaurants nearby and gaining new friends.
